Why Do Believers Hate Atheists?

It was a sunny afternoon, I was at the market in our town, selling kale I had grown in my small garden. The market was a hive of activities as sellers tried to woo the buyers and the buyers haggled. I was sitting in a shady area,a mature man, maybe in his 50s was sitting next to me with a huge pile of veggies infront of him. We had stricken a conversation  and were now quite friendly to each other. We discussed about many things, family, the economy, the corona virus among other general stuff. He seemed to like me a lot, and I thought he was a charming man too. He said he was happy that the week had gone well for him, and he was planning to go to church to make sure the next week goes smoothly as well. I am an atheist and I did not know how to react appropriately to his statement. I know how flabbergasted people get when you tell them that you do not believe that gods exist, so I chose to tread carefully.

"I don't go to  church, I believe that the church is a person's heart", I said "The church will just take your money" he moved an inch away from me, startled by my sentiments.

"Who am I sitting with?" he asked, he looked at me like I was a relative to Satan, the biblical character who is said to be the enemy "I had a friend who used to say the same thing, he preferred to give his money to poor people than give it to God" he added. I was about to say " Yes!, your friend is much smarter!" but it w went against my better judgement. I had to nod for a full hour as he preached to me about the joys of being in the "Lord". I had decided right there and then, that I would not start educating him about how the British brought Christianity to Kenya, and that the religion is purely man made. I could see from the energy that filled his words, that he was one of those immutable believers that would not tolerate anything that contradicted their beliefs. I could have lost a friend if I told him that I did  not believe in the Christian god or any other god for that matter.

Believers have found comfort in religions, in that, they have the promise of eternal life even after death. They therefore feel that the atheist's stand; there are no gods, poses a threat to their hopes of heaven and a joyful eternity. Believers see atheists as enemies, texts in religious books such as the quran and the bible that command the execution of non-believers don't make the situation any better.
