Strange Bible Story
Numbers 21:4-5, Numbers 21:6
The people of Israel Journey from Mount Hor to the Red Sea. They get weary and as a result get discouraged. They finally have to speak, they complain saying "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our souls loathe this worthless bread" One would think that the omniscient, omnipotent god of the bible would want the children of Israel to have a comfortable and smooth journey to the promised land, But NO. He has the capacity to supply them the most delicious food and plenty of water. Better yet why not magically transport them to the promised Land? Why not just avoid the slavery of the Israelites in Egypt? Why not employ his magic for the best whenever necessary?
What followed is surprising and baffling at the same time. Instead of giving them food, God sends venomous snakes to attack them causing the deaths of so many of them, reason? because they complained of hunger and thirst. The almighty god gets so petty he has to kill people for not being unable to endure hunger and thirst in silence. This is one of the strangest stories I have read from the bible. Its a complete portrayal of a god with self-esteem issues, an emotional god who cant be rational nor sensitive to the needs of his "beloved' people. I think the best way to describe his behavior is plain evil, it is narcissism at it's best.
The people then have to plead to Moses to placate God's anger. Apparently, the god cant speak to anyone but Moses. Then again, instead of making the snakes disappear. The biblical god instructs Moses to make a fiery snake, a snake that would help heal snake bites whenever one looked at it. They then have to deal with snake wounds while hungry and thirsty.
