Christians Dont Really Go By Their Book
Since I became an atheist, my life has been simpler. I dont have to jump from pastor to pastor seeking answers to "spiritual puzzles" of my life. I dot have to pray to the invisible god to show me signs on what I should do. I am a good person despite shedding religion. I have tried to educate a few people about the falsehoods of religion and how it is a foreign concept brought to us by the colonizers but its like trying to draw water using a net.
One hot Sunday, I was buying tomatoes from a friend of mine called John. He is a thin dark man with tired eyes. He likes to smile warmly at me every time I approach his vegetables stand. He was packing the tomatoes neatly into my bag when he started talking about how God was trying to manifest himself with the corona virus. Many times I wince at the level of ignorance believers display when they say this. To me, this is evidence that gods do not exist. I ponder for a minute whether I should say it or not, whats the worst that could happen anyways?
" God does not exist", it comes out of my mouth so comfortably. John stops and looks at me, "So what do you believe in?"he asks
"I have no gods to believe in" I reply "Gods were created by men, take the biblical god for example, he seems to favor the men most of the time. Have you read the old testament to see how women are regarded as mere property. Why is it that god did not include do not rape in the 10 commandments and yet it is a very terrible offence?'
He stutters but goes on to explain that committing adultery is a cluster of all sexual sins, and that do not commit adultery was included in the 10 commandments. We argue for some time, I keep pinning him down but he always comes up with ridiculous explanations for the absurdities in the bible. I finally had to leave, he gave me the bag of tomatoes telling me that he was going to make sure he prays for me, he added that he wanted me to have Jesus in my heart so badly.
I had stepped away when asked me "When are we going to cover ourselves with blankets?" I figured that he was trying to politely solicit me for sex. He was leering at my legs, there was a silence before I walked away. From several interactions I had with him, I had learnt that he had a wife. and now he was asking me if we could commit adultery. I had wanted to teach him about what his religious book said but decided against it. One thing I have learnt, Most Christians dont really follow what their bible says. Maybe that is why they still lie, steal, fornicate etc despite them believing that there is an old guy in the clouds watching them keenly. I wont be going back to John to buy vegetables anymore.
